Maths: Lotto Game

On Wednesday the 19th  of November the Extension Maths group were assigned a project to create a new lotto game not inculding numbers in the draw. We had a success criteria (Down below) and a time limit in class (it was due on Tuesday the 25th of November). Marguerite and I created a game together called REMOZ. On the Sunday I went to Marguerite's house and we spent 3 hours handmaking the tickets for our project. We also made a Prezi with the winning items on it (Prezi below). To win our game you have to get all of the items correct.

          Success Criteria:
  • Create a game of chance that can be played by NZ adults 18+ (as this is the average age)
  • Your game must be exciting and original
  • You need to work out the theoretical probability of winning your game
  • You need to work out the cost of each ticket (this cannot be a random number you need to justify why this amount, remember that lotto wants to make a profit).
  • You need to identify approximately how much the prize draw will be. (Do second and third get a prize?)
  • You will need to set up an example for the class to play

Sustainable Art

During art we have been creating our own projects (in a group if we want) out of used materials.
Amanda, Anna and I are making hanging gardens out of plastic bottle. Here is my work so far!

Narrative Writing

In writing today we created a six sentence story. To make the story Miss Kay told us the theme of that sentence and then we had to create the sentence to go along with our story. This is the order of the themes: their name, where they live, their talent, their problem, their wish, and the resolution/the ending.
This is my story:

Once upon a time there was Tigily name Tiger - Lily. Tiger - Lily lived in a beautiful little cottage just behind the Magical Waterfall of Oooe (Ewwwoe). Tiger - Lily was very fond of the beautiful forest of Oooe, and spent all her time taking care of the forest and the villagers who lived inside of it. One day Tiger - Lily was walking down the blue jellybrick road when she came across the evil witch named Fauna Flick, who turned her into a monkey, Tiger - Lily was very sad. After a long tiring day trying to turn herself back she decided to try and find the Wish Witch Florence Fix. The next day she was on her way down the purple jellybrick road when she found someone, not the evil witch nor the wish witch, but she did find The Wandering Wizard named Wazlo, who changed her back and took her home!

Maths, Reading & Visualisation

In reading we have been working on our comprehension strategies.  Last week we focused on visualisation - they way we can create mental images when we read to deepen our understanding of the text.  We read a short passage that explained how to measure a very tall object without having to climb it and we visualised how we would do this.
Yesterday we went out and put this knowledge into practice. We first stood at the bottom of the pole and then we held our arm out with a pencil vertically out at arm's height then slowly walked back until the pencil looked the same size as the pole. Then we had to tilt the pencil horizontally. Next you put the end of the pencil on the pole and your friend has to slowly move across so that they are on the end of the pencil then you measure how far away they are from the pole and that is around about how tall the pole is.
